Bespoke Jewellery Design vs Ready-Made: Which Tells Your Story Better?
There is no wrong answer when choosing between bespoke and ready-made jewellery. There is only the right answer for the piece you have in mind.
Perhaps you have spotted a ring that feels like you already. Or perhaps you have a memory, symbol or botanical detail you would love to turn into something wearable. Both paths can lead to meaningful jewellery. This guide will help you decide which suits your story, your timing and your budget.
What does ready-made mean?
Ready-made jewellery is a design I have already created and made. You can see the finished piece, choose from what is available and buy without waiting for a design to be developed.
Some designs belong to collections, such as my Botanicals collection, where natural shapes and textures inspire rings and earrings. You might see a piece that speaks to you exactly as it is. If so, you can keep the decision simple: choose your favourite, check the available options and make it yours.
Every piece is finished by hand. Natural textures and small variations mean each one has its own character, even within a familiar design.

When ready-made is the better choice
A ready-made piece could be right for you if:
- You love a design just as it is.
- You want to see the actual piece before buying.
- You need a gift soon, or simply want to buy now.
- You like choosing a design I have already made and know works well.
- You would prefer a lower, clearly listed price than a bespoke commission.
Ready-made can also be a lovely choice when you are buying for someone else. You can choose from the designs and sizes available, and each order arrives gift-ready.
If you are drawn to organic shapes, explore the Botanicals collection or browse the rings collection. You may find a piece that feels personal without needing to change a thing.
What does bespoke mean?
Bespoke jewellery is designed around your story. Instead of choosing a finished design, you and I work together to create something shaped by your idea.
That could mean a meaningful symbol, a leaf from a particular place, a date or name stamped inside a ring, or a shape designed to suit how you like to wear your jewellery. Perhaps you have been imagining a custom charm necklace, or a ring with a detail that does not exist in my current collection. Bespoke gives us room to explore those ideas.
It can be a thoughtful way to mark a milestone, celebrate someone important or create a piece nobody else will have. I love collaborating with customers. You do not need to arrive with a perfect sketch or know all the jewellery-making terms. A story, a rough idea or a small detail can be enough to begin.
How I create a botanical impression
For a botanical design, I press a fresh leaf or flower directly into soft silver clay while it is still pliable. This captures its natural veins and edges. I then remove the botanical, dry the clay and fire it with a torch. The silver clay transforms into solid fine silver, ready for me to finish by hand.
The fresh botanical is used to make the impression; it is not left inside the finished piece. And because plants naturally vary, each impression has its own lovely details.

How the bespoke process works
I keep commissioning as simple and welcoming as possible:
- We start with a conversation. Email me or get in touch through the website contact form. Tell me what the piece is for and what it means to you.
- We share ideas. We can talk through symbols, materials, sizing and details. I may create sketches to help us picture the design.
- You approve the design. I begin making once we have agreed on the direction.
- I make and finish your piece by hand. I work carefully in small-scale production, then check the final details before it is ready to ship.
- Your jewellery arrives gift-ready. Whether it is for someone you love or a meaningful treat for yourself, it is prepared with care.

Bespoke or ready-made? A quick comparison
- Time: Ready-made pieces are available to choose from now. Bespoke commissions usually take 2–4 weeks from design approval to shipping.
- Cost: Ready-made prices are listed upfront. Bespoke pricing depends on the agreed design and the work involved.
- Returns: Ready-made pieces can be returned unworn within 14 days of delivery. Custom orders are non-refundable unless faulty.
- Uniqueness: Ready-made designs are part of a collection, with natural handmade variations. A bespoke piece is designed around your personal brief.
- Sizing: Ready-made pieces come in the options available. Bespoke gives us the opportunity to discuss a non-standard size or a shape tailored to how you wear it.
- Meaning: A ready-made design can speak to you straight away. Bespoke lets us build specific details into the piece from the start.
I want to be clear about the practical side: bespoke takes longer, and its return terms differ from ready-made jewellery. If you have a date in mind, please get in touch before ordering so we can talk through timing. And if you are choosing a custom design, make sure you feel happy with the agreed details before I begin making.
Which will tell your story better?
Choose ready-made if the design already feels right, you would like to see the finished piece or you are shopping to a shorter timeline. You might find your favourite among the botanical designs, or discover a pair of earrings that feels like it was waiting for you.
Choose bespoke if the piece needs to carry a particular memory or symbol, if you have a specific botanical or shape in mind, or if your preferred size is not among the available options. It is a lovely route for marking a milestone or creating meaningful jewellery for her, or for yourself, when the details matter as much as the finished piece.
There is no “more meaningful” option by default. A ready-made ring can become part of your story through the life you give it. A bespoke design can begin with a memory you want to keep close. The right one is the piece you will want to wear and treasure.
Made to be worn and cared for
Both ready-made and bespoke pieces are made by hand from recycled silver and designed to last. As a women-owned artisan boutique in Devon, I work on a small scale and take time over every finish. In botanical jewellery, the fresh leaf’s natural impression (its veins, edges and slight irregularities) brings a piece of the natural world into the silver.
Those details are not mass-produced uniformity. They are part of the handmade charm, and part of what makes each finished piece its own.
With thoughtful care, your jewellery can stay with you for years. I recommend keeping silver dry when you are not wearing it and avoiding harsh chemicals. For more practical advice, see The Ultimate Elmes Care Guide.
