3. The Fire
This is my favourite part. I don't use a massive industrial kiln for most of my bespoke work; I use a hand-held torch. As I apply the flame, the organic binder burns away in a tiny flash of fire, and the silver particles "sinter": fusing together to become 99.9% fine silver. It's a transformation that never gets old.
4. Hand Polishing
When the piece emerges from the fire, it’s white and matte. I use a brass brush and various polishing papers to bring out the shine. I often leave some areas slightly darker (patinated) to highlight the deep textures of the botanical imprints.

Years ago, I signed up for what I thought was a traditional sterling silver soldering course. I arrived with my apron and a head full of ideas about saws and heavy hammers. Instead, I was handed a small, unassuming lump of grey clay. It looked like something you’d find in a primary school art room, not a high-end jewellery studio.
I’ll be honest, I was confused. But the moment I touched it, everything changed. Growing up, I was always the child with flour on my face and dough under my fingernails. My Nanna was a powerhouse of creativity, and she taught me that the best things in life are made by hand, slowly and with love. Whether it was a loaf of bread or a hand-stitched quilt, she valued the process as much as the result.

The Heat: You don't need a kiln! A simple crème brûlée blow torch (the kind you use for meringues) is more than enough to fire small pieces.

This is the most "baking-like" phase. You have a limited window of time before the clay starts to dry, so I always recommend having your design ready. You’ll know it’s ready when it feels chalky and room temperature: give it the "mirror test" by placing it on a cold glass surface; if it leaves a fog, it’s not dry yet!
3. The Firing (The Best Part!)
Firing is where the transformation happens. You place your dry "greenware" on a firing block and bring the flame of your torch to the silver. First, it will turn black as the binder burns off: don't panic!: and then, it will start to glow.
You’re looking for a soft, cherry-red glow. You hold it there for about two minutes, and just like that, the clay has become solid metal. It’s a primal, exciting process that never gets old.
The Finishing Touch: Bringing Out the Lustre
When your piece comes off the firing block, it won't look like silver yet. It will look like a ghost: stark, matte white. This is because the silver crystals are uncompressed.
To bring out the shine, you’ll need a brass wire brush. As you scrub, the white disappears, and the familiar gleam of fine silver emerges. I then use an agate burnisher to catch the highlights, especially on the raised parts of a texture. It’s a slow, meditative process. You watch the piece turn black as the binder burns away, and then: suddenly: it begins to glow with a soft, dull orange light. You hold it at that temperature for a few minutes, and just like that, you’ve turned "mud" into fine silver. It’s a small-scale production at its most rewarding.
5. Polishing and Assembling the Narrative
After firing, your charms will look white and matte. This is the "white silver" phase. You’ll need a brass brush and some polishing papers to bring out that high-shine or soft satin finish.
Now, we assemble. Lay your chain out and play with the arrangement. Do you want them bunched together in a cluster, or spaced out like the Daisies necklace?
